Tip of the Day 7/26/11

Today's Websites are to help get your brain in gear through this mid-summer heat.

If you have always wanted to further your education at an Ivy league school, but couldn't afford it or "make the grade," now you can without ever leaving the comfort of your own home.

At AcademicEarth.org, you can stream actual course lectures from some of the nation's top universities. Study Jack Kerouac with a Yale professor, tackle physics with an MIT engineer, or hear a UCLA political-science expert explain game theory. There's no homework, no exams, no 8 a.m. labs--just you, your curiosity, and your computer.

Or maybe, you want to learn or refresh some foreign language skills, well now you can for free. You don't have to buy that Rosetta Stone package you keep seeing advertised on TV, just start you computer and log onto bbc.co.uk/languages. Sign up for the language of your choice, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Greek, Mandarin Chinese and more, and you will get weekly e-mails from a teacher with lessons and learning tips. The BBC, one of world's largest broadcasting corporations, is on a mission to enrich people's lives with programs and services that inform, educate, and entertain.

The best part about both of these sites, they are FREE!

So, start today and keep those brain cells active and young. Happy learning.

Tip of the Day 7/21/11

In honor of the Dog Days of Summer, let’s make a “Braided Dog Toy” today.

What you’ll need:

  • 3 old cotton scarves or rags
  • Scissors
  • Safety pin and pillow (optional)

Instructions:

  1. If you are using scarves, then cut them each down to about 25 inches in length.
  2. Knot together all three scarves or rags on one end.
  3. Slide a safety pin through the scarves so you can attach the scarves and pins to a pillow. This is to help you when you do the braid part. Alternatively if you have a partner on hand, they can hold the knotted end.
  4. Braid the scarves and tie a knot on the end. Trim the ends if needed.

Dog Days of Summer Tip #3: Easy Fabric Stencils

This is a great craft for adults or kids, fabric stencils to transform anything from clothing to pillow cases, from napkins to tote bags. Always think outside the box and use your creative mind to come up with a unique idea.

Supplies:

White Freezer Paper

Fabric Paint

Stipple Brush

Scrapbooking Punches or Pre-punched Stencils available at Micheal's or Jo-Ann Fabrics

Computer Printer Paper

Iron

Lint Free Cloth (men's hanky)

Using the Scrapbooking punch or stencil create a design for the item you want to stencil. If using a punch, place a piece of printer paper between the punch and freezer paper for a cleaner punch.

Place freezer paper, shiny side down on item, cover with lint free cloth and press with hot iron. If using a pre-punched stencil, follow instructions on package. Stipple with fabric paint. Let dry completely, then peel off paper. Place lint free cloth over the design and press with iron to set.

Your item is ready to wear or use and is completely washable.

Post some pics if you try this idea.

Tip of the Day 7/19/11

Dog Day #2--"The History of Shrinky Dinks." (Excerpts from Simply Sublime Gifts by Jodi Kahn)

Not only are Shrinky Dinks fun to use, it is fun to say. What kid, or adult, wouldn't love to create something from such a fun sounding item.

"Shrinky Dinks were "invented" in 1973 by Betty Morris, a Cub Scout leader and stay-at-home mom after seeing an article in a crafting magazine involving tracing on plastic lids and shrinking them in the oven. Morris and her co-leader, Kathryn Bloomberg, introduced the project to their scouts. The boys were so excited by the activity, the women decided to create a product out of large sheets of the shrinkable plastic. They sold the first kits, they put together themselves, at the Brookfield Square Mall in Wisconsin. Morris says she knew she was onto something when the Scouts started fighting each other for the leftover scraps."

You can still purchase kits today in stores like Michael's or Jo-Ann Fabrics, etc. or you can make your own from #6 plastic containers. (Look for the "6" inside the recycling symbol, stamped into the plastic.) Containers at salad bars are often made from this kind of plastic and will shrink up in the oven just like the pre-made sheets.

Cut plastic into desired shapes. When complete your design will shrink to about 1/3 of its original size. Use a permanent marker to draw a design on the plastic or use a stencil or Scrapbooking paper punch for your desired shape. If you desire to use the design as a charm on a necklace or bracelet use a hole punch to punch a hole about 1/2 inch from the edge BEFORE shrinking.

Place shapes on a cookie sheet and bake in a 350 degree oven for a few minutes, until the plastic begins to curl, then flattens back out. Let cool and then string on ribbon or fabric strips. If you prefer not to turn on the oven during the day, create the charms during the day and then as a special treat bake the charms right before the kids head to bed.

Be creative in your designs, boys can make a dinosaur collection, girls can make a bracelet of princess crowns, and what Mom wouldn't love a cute necklace with a charm of each child initial.

Happy crafting!

Tip of the Day 7/18/11

We have hit the Dog-Days of summer; the kids are bored, hot, and tired and all they want to do is watch TV. You are bored, hot, and tired and all you want to do is watch TV. But there are still plenty of great adventures to have. Some of my favorite memories from childhood involve creating. The love to create continues today and I believe it started as a child when I was able to let my imagination soar. I always loved going to TG &Y in Tulsa (the "Five and Dime" of T-Town) and getting a new coloring book, drawing pad, crayons, craft kit, or paint-by-number set. Sometimes I would have scraps of fabric and spend hours creating Barbie clothes. My sister and I would create Barbie houses from shoe boxes and hankies. Today I still love to visit the Five and Dime in our town and look through the coloring books and kids craft kits. When my grandkids are in town I give them each $5 and let them pick whatever they want. It is fun to see how creative they are picking out something silly and cheap to play with. So, take the kids to a fun store, not one of the big box stores that you always go to, and let them pick out a fun kit or coloring book and new crayons. Try Michael's, or Joann Fabrics, Family Dollar or Dollar Tree if you don't have a good old fashioned "Five and Dime." Pick up a new coloring book or craft kit for yourself while you're there. Let's have some fun today.

Tip of the Day 7/17/11

"See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourself, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourself innocent in this matter." 2 Cor. 7: 11 May you be blessed in His presence this day!

Tip of the Day 7/16/11

Hot Weather Tip #6--Let's go to the movies. This is a great way to spend a really hot day. Go to the early matinee for the best price. Call the theater or check the listings for special showings at discount rates. Another way to save is to take paper bags and cups for everyone and buy the biggest bucket of popcorn and soda, then fill them up for everyone. Enjoy the show!

Tip of the Day 7/15/11

Hot Weather Tip #5--In honor of my niece and her boys, if all else fails to help you cool off declare your house a "no clothes zone!" I am pretty sure I will never be that hot. :) Have a cool day!

Tip of the Day 7/14/11

Hot weather tip #4--To help keep the house cooler shut vents, curtains, and the door in rooms you rarely go into. Pull blinds or curtains during the time of day the sun is coming through the windows of each room. Use ceiling fans to circulate the A/C. Do not run washer, dryer, dishwasher, or stove during the day. Shut off computers when not in use. All appliances generate heat.

Tip of the Day 7/13/11

Day 3 Heat Advisory Tip--This is a perfect day to spend at the Library. Take advantage of the cool air, read a newspaper or magazine. Find a quiet spot and read to the kids. Most libraries have nooks to hang out in. If yours has a "public lunch room" like ours does, take lunch with and make a day of it. No money spent and money saved by not having to cool your house as much.

Tip of the Day 7/12/11

Another hot weather survival tip--Sometimes it is just too hot to be out in the pool so fill the bathtub with cool water and turn the kids (or yourself) loose with popsicles.

Tip of the Day 7/11/11

Visiting my childhood church yesterday reminded me of how we celebrated "Christmas in July" gathering gifts to send to missionary's in far-off lands. With the temperature being so hot, this would be a good day to stay inside and watch a Christmas movie and make Snow Cones or play one of those new games you got for Christmas last year. Have a Holly Jolly Day!

Tip of the Day 7/10/11

"Run in the course of His commandments, for He shall enlarge your heart." Psalm 119: 32. May we run the race that is set before us with endurance, looking only unto Jesus!

Tip of the Day 7/9/11

To finish off our summer meal we have put together this week let's make a refreshing iced tea. Brew a fruit flavored or unflavored tea. Freeze lemonade in ice cube trays. Add to the tea and garnish with fresh fruit if desired. Hope everyone will try some or all of the recipes and have a great meal Al Fresco this weekend.

Tip of the Day 7/8/11

The main course for our awesome summer meal we are preparing this week is a Chorizo-Shrimp Burger. This can be served on slider buns or just with lightly fried corn tortillas on the side. 1 tube Chorizo, 4-6 oz. shrimp-chopped fine, 3-4 scallions chopped fine, 1 egg-mix well, form into patties, lightly fry in small amount of olive oil. Top with quacamole.

Tip of the Day 7/7/11

If you have never tried a cold soup, it is an awesome treat on a hot summer day. Here is a great recipe to try.

Mango Gazpaucho

Puree: 2 Cups fresh or frozen Mango, 2 Cups Orange Juice, and 2 Tbls. Olive Oil. Chill until ready to serve.

Cut 1 large red bell pepper, and 1 cucumber into chunks. Dice one small white or yellow (sweet) onion. Add to soup. Seed and dice 1 jalapeno (optional). Clean and chop fresh cilantro and serve on top of soup.

This may sound a little different, but trust me on this one, it is delicisioso!

Tip of the Day 7/6/11

Do you remember good old fashioned pudding pops from when you were a kid? Why not make some today and treat yourself and the kids.

Mix a small package of instant pudding according to the directions. Pour into small paper cups. Insert a popsicle stick or plastic spoon into the center. Freeze for several hours until solid. Peel off paper cup, roll in your favorite sprinkles and enjoy. You can use sugar free pudding and fat free or low fat milk for a low cal treat.

Tip of the Day 7/5/11

Many of us enjoyed a great slice of watermelon over this holiday weekend. I would like to share a recipe for a fun alternative. Half a honeydew melon lengthwise. Remove seeds. Slice a small piece off bottom of rind just so melon will sit flat. Mix red jello of choice and pour into melon. When thickened, not gelled, add raisins. When Gelled completely, slice like watermelon wedges.

Tip of the Day 7/3/11

"I will listen to what God the Lord will say; He promises peace to His people, His saints, but let them not return to folly. Surely His salvation is near those who fear Him, that His glory may dwell in our land. Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other." Psalm 85: 8-10

Tip of the Day 7/1/11

For those of you that have never gone camping before I am supplying a list of ideas to make a camping trip a very pleasant experience.
For first time campers I would suggest making reservations at an established campground like KOA or Yogi Bear Jellystone Parks.  Many State Parks also take reservations.  These are the best types of parks if you want a warm shower and indoor plumbing.
Another option is the "cabins" located at these type of parks.  They normally just have beds inside and you will need to check if they supply a grill.  Some have indoor plumbing, but most share the "public" washrooms with the other campers.
Many campgrounds have swimming pools and fishing ponds.
The camping supplies suggested are what you would want for a trip of several days.  If you are only camping for one night you would want to eliminate some of the items according to your own needs.
Most campgrounds no longer allow you to bring in your own firewood.  You will need to purchase it onsite.
